AREA AND CUBE MATH - Determining area and cubic measurement is a frequent requirement in real estate. You may be called upon to compute acreage based on number of square feet vie versa, the number of square feet in a house, the cubic measure of excavations, concrete requirements, etc. Most problems require that you analyze the situation and break the problem down into logical steps to solve.

RECTANGULAR AREAS:
Formulas:

Area =
Length =
Width =
Length X width
Area ÷ width
Area ÷ length
125x50.gif (532 bytes) Area = 125' X 50' = 6,250 sq.ft.
Length = 6,250 ÷ 50' = 125'
Width = 6,250 ÷ 125 = 50'

TRIANGULAR AREAS
Formula:
Area = 1/2 (length X width) of rectangle including triangle.

15X25_tri.GIF (1332 bytes) The triangle occupies 1/2 the space of a rectangle having the same length and height of the triangle.

Calculation; 1/2 X (25 X 15) = 187.5 sq.ft.

ODD-SHAPED AREAS (HOUSES);

Ext_Hom_Dim.GIF (1715 bytes)

Solution 1 - Break down into rectangles & add:
Solution 1.GIF (2065 bytes)
(1) 35' X 12' =
(2) 10' X 14' =
(3) 10' X 31' =
(4)   6' X 12' =
Add totals
420 sq.ft.
140 sq.ft
310 sq.ft.
72   sq.ft
942 sq.ft
Solution 2 - Make into one large rectangle & subtract:
Solution 2.GIF (1941 bytes)
Find Exterior
Dimensions
Length 10'+35' =
Width 14'+12 =
Gross Area

(1)35' X 4'
(2)10' X 4'
(3)12' X 4'
Net Area

    45'
X 26'
1,170sq.ft.

Subtract

140sq.ft.
40 sq.ft.
48 sq.ft.
942 sq.ft.

VOLUME: Formula - Length X Width X Height

Volume.GIF (1788 bytes) Volume:
6' X 20' X 15' =
1800 Cubic Feet.

CONVERSIONS - You frequently must make conversions from inches to feet, feet to yards, miles to feet, acres to square feet, and so on, to solve area and cube problems. The Tables of Measures and Equivalents should be used to make necessary conversions. There are certain equivalents that must be memorized.

PROBLEMS

1. How many cubic yards of dirt will be excavated from a trench 1 mile long, 2 feet wide and 18 inches deep?

2. You sell a lot 60 feet wide and 125 feet deep at 10 cents per square foot. What was the price?

3. a lot 75 feet wide by 110 feet deep sold for $8,750.00. What was the price per front foot? What was the price per square foot?

4. you decide to build a swimming pool 30 feet long, 15 feet wide and 5 feet deep. Your contractor will dig it for 2.90 per cubic yard. How much will it cost for excavation?

5. A lot 100X108.9 feet is what part of an acre?

6. Your client bought the NW1/4 of NW1/4, Section II, Township 16N, Range 18 E for $2,000.00 per acre. He subdivided it into 75 lots. Development cost was $46,500.00 and lots sold for $2,000.00 each. What was your clients profit?

7. You subdivide 4˝  acres into 50 foot' by 100 foot lots. After allowing 71,020 square feet for streets, how many lots will you have?

8. How many square feet in this house?

Ques8_Ar_Cb.GIF (2703 bytes)

9. Assuming the above house has no windows and has 8 foot walls, what would be the cost to paint it if a gallon of paint costs $8.00 and covers 200 square feet?

10. How deep is a rectangular lot of 2.5 acres with a frontage of 750 feet?
